The programme is divided into three parts.

Part 1: half day 23rd January (13:30-16:30) and half day 24th January (13:30-16:30)

Part 2: one of either the morning of 30th January (09:30-12:30) or the afternoon of 30th January (13:30 to 16:30) 

Part 3: half day 31st January (09:30-12:30)

This session will equip PGRs who are about to start teaching, or who have recently started teaching, with tools and approaches to make that teaching even more effective. The focus will be on enhancing their preparation for teaching sessions, their approach and delivery of those sessions in a range of environments, and on building the foundation of their ongoing professional development as HE teachers.

Specifically, the session will:

• Consider what makes ‘effective’ HE teaching, including the differences in different forms of teaching (tutorials, seminars, lectures)
• Introduce a key pedagogical taxonomy of learning outcomes
• Discuss the learning function of assessment, both formative and summative
• Explore the impact of the teaching environment (F2F v virtual; group size; physical space; use of technology) and how to create a space for effective learning
• Begin the practical process of planning a teaching session
• And carry this through to delivery of a micro-teach session, with feedback and support.

The course will run over two-and-a-half days, although participants will only be required to attend the equivalent of two full days. 

Part 1: everyone attends both afternoon sessions and they sign up for a morning or afternoon slot of Part 2.

Part 2: 1/4 of the group spends the morning with Dave, the other 1/4 with Jamie, leading the micro-teach practice. The other 1/4s of the group are similarly arranged in the afternoon.

Part 3: everyone attends the final half-day session.
