Day 2 – Wednesday 16th September 2026 10:00 - 15.30

Participants must be able to attend both days.

Who is the programme for?

This programme is for postgraduate researchers who would like to develop their understanding of teaching and learning in higher education. It is suitable whether you are considering teaching as part of a future academic career, are already undertaking formally contracted teaching activities, or have a wider interest in academic practice.

No previous teaching experience is required.

Delivery: A two-day, instructor-led and interactive programme.

About the programme

This programme provides an introduction to the purposes, principles and contemporary context of teaching and learning in higher education.

You will explore the social, political, technological and educational developments shaping university teaching. Drawing on practical examples from Northumbria University’s Curriculum Excellence Framework (CEF), you will consider how wider trends inform the University’s educational priorities and how its Institutional Strategy is translated into practice.

You will examine inclusive, experiential and student-centred approaches to curriculum design, teaching, assessment, feedback and student support. You will also discuss contemporary issues including engagement and belonging, wellbeing, artificial intelligence and digital education, academic integrity, and the changing expectations placed upon universities and educators.

The programme will introduce the roles, responsibilities and professional boundaries associated with supporting student learning and working as part of an academic team.

Sessions are led by experienced colleagues from across Northumbria University and include presentations, discussions and practical activities. The programme provides a broad foundation for developing your understanding of educational practice and considering how teaching and supporting learning might contribute to your future professional development.

Aims and learning outcomes

During the programme, you will explore:

• the UK higher education context and Northumbria University’s Curriculum Excellence Framework (CEF);
• key principles and contemporary debates in teaching, learning and assessment;
• inclusive, experiential and student-centred approaches to education;
• the implications of artificial intelligence and digital technologies;
• student engagement, belonging and wellbeing; and
• the professional roles and responsibilities associated with supporting learning.

Important information

This is a developmental programme delivered by experienced practising academics.

You are expected to attend both days, as the sessions form a connected programme and the second day builds on the first.

Completion does not confer eligibility or entitlement to undertake teaching work or provide direct access to or information about Associate Fellowship of Advance HE. Any teaching or learning-support activity at Northumbria University must be arranged separately through the University’s approved employment and governance processes.
